George Washington High School began as a 2-room schoolhouse located on the right hand side of the overpass bridge near the Arizona Chemical Company. The building was relocated to Martin Luther King Blvd. and Ave. G around 1940. A second larger building was constructed in the early 1950s and faced Kenney St. An L-shaped building housed students until Port St. Joe schools integrated in 1970

David W. Jones was born November 11, 1923, and was head coach and physical education instructor at the Washington High School from 1953 until 1970. He often visited his students’ homes and their churches, teaching them respect, responsibility, perseverance, initiative, kindness, fairness, honesty and cooperation. David W. Jones died June 2, 1976.
